Program Goal:
The goal of the Wasanabin program is to provide support and tools to urban Indigenous children and youth to promote healthy choices and holistic wellbeing. This program is designed to offer intensive support, using one-to-one services and action planning to support direct-service user goal attainment.
Provision of social supports such as group-based programming to address self-esteem issues and peer pressure.
Promotion of healthy eating and physical development to address inter-related health impacts of poverty, diabetes, and obesity.
Support for urban Indigenous children through institutional interventions, such as providing educational access and retention supports, school suspension supports, homework help, linkages to tutor and justice prevention, and intervention activities.
Promotion of violence prevention to address violence within the home, schools (bullying), online and in communities where urban Indigenous children live.
Support to urban Indigenous children with disabilities such as FASO, ASD spectrum, etc. and their families by providing access and linkages to specialized services through referrals such as diagnostic, assessments, etc.
Through outreach, the program aims to increase access to culturally appropriate services for children in care or who are at risk of being in the care of a children's aid society by providing access to support for children, youth, families, caregivers, and adoptive/foster parents.
Provision of 2SLGBTQ+ supports ensuring a safe and welcoming space for all gender identities and sexual orientation.
